Designooor: What led you to the profession of lighting?

My journey into the world of lighting began as I sought ways to externalize my inner landscape. I realized that lighting design is not just about illumination; it’s about crafting an atmosphere, telling a story, and evoking emotions. The interplay of shadows and light, the subtle hues and dramatic contrasts, all became a language through which I could communicate my inner world.

Designooor: What has been your greatest achievement as a lighting artist / designer?

Lighting design has become more than a career for me; it is a profound extension of my journey of self-discovery and emotional expression. Through it, I have learned to harness the power of light to inspire, soothe, and transform, and in doing so, I have found a path that not only fulfills me but also brings light and beauty into the lives of others.

Designooor: Can you fully describe one of your lighting design projects you particularly like? What features captivated you in this project?

One of the most impactful projects I’ve had the privilege of creating was the upside dome light art maze installation in Tehran. This project was particularly special to me because it was the most engaging light art installation I have ever exhibited, captivating the attention and imagination of over 5,000 people.

The installation was designed as a mirrored maze, immersing visitors in a reflective environment that played with perceptions and perspectives. At the heart of the installation were fluid Iranian architectural lights, which I carefully designed to express themes of liberty and freedom. The use of these lights was not just an artistic choice, but a deliberate attempt to weave the rich cultural heritage of Iran with contemporary expressions of personal and collective liberation.

Designooor: In most of your lighting projects, you have been inspired by Iran’s traditional patterns. What specific elements and patterns attract you the most as a source of inspiration, and why? Additionally, how do you integrate these traditional influences into your lighting designs?

Islamic architecture has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, particularly in Iran. The architectural style embodies a striking contrast between the softness of its intricate beauty and the rigid, harness shapes that form its structure. This juxtaposition resonates deeply with me because it mirrors the complexities of life in Iran—a blend of delicate elegance and steadfast strength.

By integrating elements of Islamic architecture with light, I aim to create installations that tell a compelling story. Light serves as a dynamic medium to highlight the contrasts and bring the architectural elements to life in new and evocative ways. It allows me to play with shadows and illumination, enhancing the visual impact and emotional resonance of the designs.

Designooor: When faced with complex challenges in lighting design, what approach do you take to find creative and efficient solutions?

This mindset has been crucial in my work, especially in complex projects like the upside dome light art maze installation in Tehran. The intricate design and technical demands of the project required not only creativity and vision but also meticulous planning and execution. By collaborating with skilled professionals and technicians, I was able to overcome obstacles and bring my vision to life.

Designooor: When do you personally feel most creative?

Creativity, for me, thrives in the vibrant energy of society. Being surrounded by people, engaging in brainstorming sessions, and collaborating with others are the catalysts that ignite my most innovative ideas. The dynamic exchange of perspectives and the collective effort to solve problems inspire me to push the boundaries of my creativity.
