Richard Kelly

Richard Kelly (1910–1977) was an American pioneer of architectural lighting design and one of the most influential figures in shaping the discipline as an independent field. Working with leading architects including Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, Eero Saarinen, and Louis Kahn, Kelly developed a perceptual approach to light centered on three fundamental principles: Ambient Luminescence, Focal Glow, and Play of Brilliants. His work demonstrated that lighting should do more than provide visibility, it should shape architectural perception, direct attention, reveal material, and create atmosphere. His ideas continue to influence architectural lighting education and professional practice worldwide.
